If culture and history is more your thing, then take a look at Cathedrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg, a 466 feet tall cathedral that towers over the city (between 1647 and 1874 it was the tallest building in the world – pretty impressive). The hauntingly carved exterior and beautiful stained glass windows of the cathedral make it a magnificent example of early gothic architecture. Take a stroll around the cathedral or even walk to the top of the tower, but don’t forget to check out the astronomical clock, where carved statues of Christ and his apostles make a daily midday appearance. More culture and history can be found at the Palais Rohan, an 18th Century French palace which houses three different museums. The palace exhibits pieces of fine art and decorative arts, with a whole floor dedicated to archaeology. After enjoying a day at the museum, you go can go on to enjoy an evening of opera at Strasbourg’s Opéra National du Rhin. Another a beautiful example of the extravagant architecture in Strasbourg, the Opéra National du Rhin also showcases concerts, ballet and performances for kids. If your flight to Strasbourg is in winter, you’re in for a treat. Expect to be surrounded by glittering Christmas markets, trees and twinkling lights which fill the traditional, bustling streets of Strasbourg. Warming glühwein, bratwurst, and traditional spiced breads give you that little taste of Germany as you meander through the decorated streets. Don’t worry though; if your flight is in the summer, Strasbourg has a number of great local markets which are open throughout the year. Romantic getaway, city break or even family holiday – Strasbourg is a fascinating destination of great food, history and architecture.
