Things to do in Bastia
A long history of rule by Genoa gives Bastia a strong Italian flavor, with lots of baroque churches and a grand fortress. Hugging the forested hills, the town combines narrow stone alleys with long stairways, great views and an array of nearby beaches. Explore the hill villages on horseback, mountain bike or hiking trails, catching the scent of herbs and experiencing the Corsican maquis, or tough scrub. Hardier climbs take you up the mountains, where you might spot a bird of prey.
Bastia's old port is lined with bars and restaurants, tall houses and the twin towers of St. Jean-Baptiste Church behind. Going round the harbor to the south, you'll come to the colorful houses of the marina and then the ramparted citadel built by the Genoese. Along the way, climb the cobbled steps to the Romieu gardens for a great view back across the harbor. Around Bastia, you'll also see a cathedral full of paintings and statues and a museum housed in the Governor's Palace.
Sun lovers will find four pebbled beaches within easy reach of Bastia, and plenty more sandy beaches near Biguglia Lagoon if you fancy a drive. Not far up Corsica's east coast is the beach of Pietracorbara, surrounded by mountains of outstanding natural beauty. Bastia is also a great place to try scuba diving due to its very clear water, colorful marine life and clutch of historic shipwrecks.
Bastia enjoys a fairly mild climate with moderately hot summers and long, often wet winters. It's not too hot for touring the scenery, and a good way to do this is by train around the mountains. You shouldn't be able to build a railway in this kind of terrain, but 19th-century engineers, including M. Eiffel, built some amazing tunnels and viaducts. A ride up to Corte takes you through the mountains and gorges, passing chestnut trees, stone pines and olive groves.

The cuisine in Bastia blends that of France and Italy, and adds a strong native Corsican emphasis. You'll enjoy the interesting flavors in Bastia's restaurants, with local delicacies like sheep's cheese and salami. Plane trees provide shade to restaurants and cafes around the Place du Marche, where the weekends host a farmers' market. On offer are traditional fritelli doughnuts, brocciu cheese, and cured or smoked pork. Chestnuts are everywhere and many dishes are made with their flour, including polenta, porridge, cakes and beer.
