Ajaccio looks like a typical Mediterranean town, featuring imperial boulevards lined with palm trees, cafes and restaurants. On the side streets, you'll find traditional boutiques, small bars and souvenir shops. But many people flock from the UK to Ajaccio because of its unique history as Napoleon's birthplace. You'll see the house where he was born, the cathedral where he was baptised, and countless statues and memorials. The museums are stuffed with his furniture, medals, paintings and sculpture. An astonishing collection of artists are represented, from Michelangelo to Titian and Tintoretto.
Not so into your history? Ajaccio today is most known for its combination of wild beauty and imperial splendour. A great day out is a coastal cruise to the UNESCO-listed Scandola Nature Reserve. You'll be impressed by its vast cliffs, sea caves and waterfalls, and you might spot a dolphin on the way. Another must-see on your Ajaccio holiday is the Lac de Tolla, about 20 miles into the mountains. It's a large artificial lake, where you can rent a pedalo, canoe or paddle board. You can also hike into the Prunelli Gorge for sheer cliffs, cascading waterfalls and rocky pools.

Food-wise, Corsica is known for its bold red wines, its preserved meats and creamy sheep's milk cheese. Sweet custardy desserts and doughnuts are made with this cheese, called Brocciu. Local chestnuts go into a traditional cake and yummy Corsican honey is protected by European laws.
