Nice’s airport is known as the gateway not only to the beautiful city of Nice, but also to the entire French Riviera. Its convenient location perched to the west of Nice makes it possible to get to the closest beach within minutes, and to the city centre in 30 minutes. You can also easily drive to other top locations on the Riviera, including Antibes, Cannes, and Saint Tropez. There’s even the option of hopping on a quick helicopter ride to Monaco.

Traveling to Vieux Nice from the airport

It couldn’t be easier to get Nice’s famous old town from the airport. The airport bus is probably the most convenient public transport, delivering you directly from arrivals to multiple convenient locations throughout the city within 30 mins. You can also take a bus to the tram, which will drop you off right in the centre of the town, or hop in a cab for a quick and easy journey (at a higher cost). 

What to do in Nice France

The biggest attraction in Nice is its famous palm tree-lined Promenade des Anglais: a 5km long pedestrianised waterfront that stretches all the way to the airport. Popular with cyclists, roller skaters, and anyone just wanting to enjoy the fresh seaside breeze, it’s Nice’s top highlight. Just behind the promenade is the Albert I Garden, which is a fantastic place to relax amongst Nice’s nature. Built-in 1852, it’s one of the oldest parks on the French Riviera. In the height of summer, you’ll find locals enjoying picnics here and soaking up the sun while sprawling out on the grass. Not far away, you’ll get the best view of Nice from Colline du Chateau, or Castle Hill. You can walk all the way up, or there’s a lift that takes you most of the way. Don’t leave without seeing the waterfall that crashes down the cliff. On a hot day, walk to the base of the falls to feel the cool spray on your skin. 

Although Nice’s waterfront area is its main attraction, it’s worth spending some time in the town itself. Nice’s old town, called Vieux Nice, is filled with tiny little alleyways and small squares hosting fruit and flower markets. This part of town is where you’ll find the Nice Cathedral and the city’s main shopping street: Avenue Jean Medecin. Olive oil and olive wood items are popular souvenirs. 

Beaches near Nice

While you’ll always find sunbathers by the water’s edge, most of Nice’s beaches are more pebbly than sandy. What they lack in sand, however, they make up for in water quality. The water here is very clear and excellent for swimming, so you’ll often find locals out enjoying their morning dip. The Promenade des Anglais is also home to some gorgeous beach clubs, so you can easily enjoy a day in the sun with a glass of rosé in hand!

If you're looking for more of a classic sandy beach, you don’t have to go far. The nearby seaside towns of Villefranche and Cap d’Ail are known for their beautiful beaches, and there are also secluded coves all along the coastline offering soft sand and stunning views.

Eating like the locals in Nice

You can sample some delicious French cuisine in Nice, but the most popular type of food to try here is the local street food. The idea is that you pick up something you can eat with your hands and enjoy it as you stroll along the promenade. The traditional option in Nice is socca. It’s a type of thin pancake made with chickpea flour. It’s lightly fried with a bit of olive oil and salt, torn into strips, and popped into a little cup you can take away with you. You can buy dried chips to take back home, too. 

Exploring the French Riviera from Nice Airport

Nice is such a lovely and friendly destination that you could easily spend your entire holiday here. But remember: there’s so much more to explore when you fly to the South of France. Luckily, there’s a regular train service that connects all the major towns. It takes between 20 and 30 minutes to get to Cannes and Monaco. It’s also around 40 minutes from Menton, which is famous for its beaches and gardens. Rent a car or book a tour to explore the beautiful vineyards, famous worldwide for their apricot-coloured rosé wines, or to test out world-famous perfumes in the charming village of Grasse. Or plan a longer trip, and take yourself a few hours west to discover Marseille and its beautiful Provençale surroundings. There’s truly no limit to what you can discover on the French Riviera.
