Holidays to Hammamet tick off all the North African hallmarks. This pretty whitewashed town is fronted by a stellar beach – 10 kilometres of soft, honey-coloured sand which unravels along the Cap-Bon peninsula. You’ve also got ancient sites aplenty, and a nightlife scene that ticks off atmospheric restaurants and shisha bars.

The timewarp medina is home to the oldest mosque in the country, along with a Kasbah offering up sensational sea views. This is also the place to shop for souvenirs – the cobbled alleyways are stuffed with stores selling locally made goods like lanterns and carpets. 

Away from the Medieval marketplace, there are smart, palm-lined avenues filled with contemporary bars and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for dancing, you’ll also find a couple of swish clubs on the edge of town, with decadent interiors and decent wine and cocktail menus.
