Why fly to Rome?

Just an hour southeast from the crowds, the excitement, the sights of Rome is the peaceful Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani. Take the FL4 train from Rome to Velletri. From there it's a short taxi ride to the heart of the park. With your hiking gear, a couple of days of food, and your camping gear, you can explore the high woodlands, hills and small farming villages. Keep your eyes open for a wild boar. Lago Albano and Lago di Nemi are beautiful volcanic lakes well worth a visit (and a dip).

Best time to visit

July and August are when the summer season reaches its peak in Rome. The city can be hot, humid and crowded during these months, but just right for dining al fresco at the many restaurant terraces and evening strolls by the Tiber. There's also plenty of festivities to get involved with including Festa di Noantri and Rock in Roma in July.

Avoid the crowds

If you don't fancy knocking elbows with other holiday makers at popular attractions like the Forum Romana, fly to Rome in May or September. You'll still get to enjoy warm weather, but you won't have to deal with the sweltering temperatures of midsummer or the crowds that come with them. The weather is generally dry and bright too, although rain becomes more likely as September advances.
