July and August are the hottest and driest months in Bologna. With up to ten hours of sunshine each day, it's ideal for seeing all the city's sites, although you may find yourself in plenty of company as these are also the most popular months for visiting holidaymakers. The days are just right for discovering the open markets while the evenings are made for al fresco dining.

Avoid the crowds

Sidestep the crowds of tourists that descend on the city in the peak of summer by flying to Bologna in April, May, or June, and you'll also swerve the expensive rates that come with them. Bologna in the spring is paradisiacal with warm, but altogether more manageable temperatures. There are also lots of festivities in the city and surrounding region to enjoy, such as May Day celebrations and Reggio Emilia's Lambrusco festival in June.
