Accessible from Ancona airport, the Marche region is the Italian countryside you’ve always dreamed of. Although it doesn’t have the extravagance of Florence or Venice, the cultural cupboard of these small towns is far from bare. Every small town in the region has a castle, church or museum worth a visit but even without those stops, you’d still be compelled to go for the sweeping panoramic views, natural beauty and traditional food.

The sparsely populated area is perfect for the slower paced traveller and is great for those wanting to hike the spectacular Monto Sibillini range. Ancona itself is an earthy but engaging port town that acts as a gateway to the south where you can find the incredible Conero Riveria adorned with white pebble beaches backed by milky cliffs. The town itself was settled by the Greeks around 380BC and has always served as an important destination in the Roman empire as a trade route with other nations across the Adriatic.

These days seaside resorts dot the coastline including Pesaro and the lesser known Fano. Away from the water the best known attraction of Le Marche’s sights is the small town of Loreto, one of Italy’s top pilgrimage sites. The Basilica is believed to provide shelter for what many Catholics claim is Jesus’ childhood house, air freighted to Le Marche by angels.

Ancona is at its warmest between June and August. These are the best months to fly into this port city if you plan on spending some time on Passetto Beach and taking a swim in the Adriatic Sea. If you want to combine your trip to Ancona with a visit to Croatia just across the water, the high summer is also when you'll find the most frequent ferries.

Avoid the crowds

Fly into Ancona in May or September for mild weather and a better chance of finding competitive deals on flights and hotels. At the end of May and early September, the evenings will be pleasant enough to sit out at Piazza del Plebiscito's restaurant terraces. You'll also find that it's the most comfortable temperature for hiking up Monte Guasco to see the the Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco.
