Genoa, the Italian Riveria’s diamond in the rough.
Tiered somewhat like a historic wedding cake of terracotta houses over crystal blue water this sleepy Italian town is one of the most beautiful seaside regions in the country. Even though it’s just a stone’s throw away the glamourous and widely known seaside town of Portofino, Genoa has plenty of its own swagger. It shines in the summer as the kingpin of the riveria offering access to sweeping panoramic views, relaxing beaches and mouth-watering Italian food.
Pressed tight against the sea as if pinned there by the Alps, Genoa has a proud history that dates back to the middle ages. It was home to one of the great maritime empires of the ages endowing it with the wealth, architecture and artistic grandeur of a big city with the grit of a small port town. It is well worn but glamourous like a vintage Versace dress that has been well loved.
A network of fortresses defending the city connected by a wall second only in length to the Great Wall of China were constructed by the cities inhabitants who adorned Genoa with palaces, churches and an impressive art collection. Its’ collection of beautiful buildings are so precious that it was even named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006.
Getting lost in the city’s maze-like-alleys is essential to getting a feel for the city’s historic vibe where you can find an array of restaurants, cafes and ships. You can also take a walk on the coastal promenade called Corso Italia which will bring you to Boccadasse a quaint village where you can lay on the rocky beach, enjoy an aperitif and watch the waves.
