Why fly to Reus?

Barcelona might have taken the credit for celebrated architect Antoni Gaudi, but it was actually in Reus that the artist was born and lived for the first years of his life. The city is filled with stunning architecture and tributes to Gaudi, although in a surprising twist of irony, none of the buildings were actually designed by Gaudi himself. Regardless, travellers still flock to the charming Spanish city in the heart of Catalonia to follow his story at the Gaudi Centre located in Plaça del Mercadal. There are a range of audiovisual exhibitions and interactive displays that allow visitors to touch, listen and feel his works including the workshop he used to build the famous Sagrada Familia Church in Barcelona.

If you’ve had your fill of Gaudi and architecture, time to induldge in Reus’ other famous export – vermouth. The sweet fortified wine made with special herbs is now Spain’s trendiest drink after undergoing a recent revival. You can start your vermouth experience at the Vermouth Museum, the world’s largest collection of vermouth related items. Travellers can also see what all the fuss is about and try the different types of vermouth themselves at the Rofes restaurant where the famous Rofes brand was established more than a hundred years ago.

Aside from its own charms, the small picturesque town is often a hub for travellers heading to Barcelona, with the international airport only an hour and 20 minutes away from Barcelona city. It’s also near the east coast of Spain, making it the perfect entry point if you’re planning a jaunt to one of the coastal towns of Salou, Cambrils and La Pineda.

From May to September it’s high season in Reus, and the beaches in nearby resorts like Salou and Cambrils are busy with tourists. Temperatures peak in June, July and August in the late 20s and early 30s, and the sea is as warm as a bath, so it’s perfect for little ones.

Avoid the crowds

Consider April or May is you’d like more space to yourself on the beaches near Reus. It’s still warm enough to relax on the sand, but the water can be too cold to swim in if you’re here in early April. This is also the ideal time to explore the city on foot, taking in the rich architecture and dining al fresco in its sunny squares.
