Compared to its slightly livelier neighbours of Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife, Playa de los Pocillos is peaceful, low-key and laid-back, with a family-friendly feel – and it’s also on the southeastern side of Lanzarote and is just a 10-minute drive from the airport.

Activity at this tranquil seaside haven centres around the glorious sandy beach, where small children will love paddling and splashing in the sea, which is much gentler here than on other parts of the island. Nightlife slants more towards live music and outdoor eating than out-and-out clubbing, but if you fancy a big night out, stroll along the seafront promenade all the way to neighbouring Matagorda or on to buzzy Puerto del Carmen for restaurants, bars and a whole lot of fun.

Where is the best food?

On the seafront you’ll find great seafood restaurants – feast on fish with Canarian mojo sauce and raise a glass of Lanzarote wine to the ridiculously romantic sunset.

Yes indeed. The Atlantic Ocean is usually temperate and there are all sorts of aquatic delights to be found close to the shores around Playa de los Pocillos.

Pop to Arrecife for the International Museum of Contemporary Art. Housed in an 18th-century fortress, you’ll find works by great Spanish artists including Picasso, Miro and Tapies.
