Where beach life meets nightlife

Arrecife holidays combine all the benefits of a vibrant capital city – including buzzy nightlife and cultural attractions – with glorious weather and the sun-washed beaches of Lanzarote. The best beach is to be found at Playa del Reducto, which is sheltered by a reef (Arrecife is Spanish for ‘reef’) and has pretty palm trees and fine, white sands – ideal for sunbathing and water sports such as kayak and stand-up paddle boarding. Bargain hunters will love to spend holidays to Arrecife wandering the markets, ‘churros’ in hand.

The indoor La Recova market stocks vintage clothes and homewares daily, while a large Saturday street market sells artisan goods, local produce and crafts. And for culture, there’s the International Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in the 18th-century San José castle. Or you can simply relax with a cold drink at one of the city’s many bars or cafés, before ambling down to the marina for prime people watching and gorgeous ocean views.

Visit shopping street Calle León y Castillo (known as Calle Real) to splurge on high-street and designer labels – and use that Canary Islands duty-free status on items such as perfume.
During the annual Carnival at the beginning of Lent, thousands of people fill the city streets with processions, parades and parties involving costumed dancers and musicians.
