Åre village is a big city in miniature form, where the hip and laid-back culture attracts young start-ups, new chefs and some of the world’s best skiers. Åre is also home to legendary après-ski nightlife and many well-known restaurants as well as craft breweries, farm shops and bakeries - so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience the Swedish tradition of ‘fika’, taking a break to have coffee and cake. And maybe you’ve heard of Fäviken - one of the world’s best restaurants in the middle of the Swedish wilderness, but still just half an hour from Åre Östersund.

The area around Östersund has numerous skiing resorts for all levels. Another popular ski resort among the Swedes is Vemdalen. Situated an hour and a half south of Östersund, Vemdalen offers some of the most varied skiing in Sweden. Coupled with wide slopes and their friendly environment Vemdalen is the ideal ski resort for beginners and families. Other examples for a perfect Swedish winter wonderland holiday are Lofsdalen and Funäsfjällen situated two and a half hour from the airport.

Are Ostersund is a delight in the spring and summer months, when the lakesides are filled with wildflowers and the temperatures the mildest. It’s also the best time for getting out and enjoying the area’s countless outdoor activities. Alternatively, come in the cold winter months and hole up in one of Are Ostersund’s luxury spas.

Avoid the crowds

Are Ostersund is busy between May and September, with tourists flocking here to take in the fresh lake air and get to grips with hiking and kayaking. Come in April for lower prices and cooler temperatures – it’s still mild enough to enjoy the outdoors, though.
