Why fly to Frankfurt?

Glinting skyscrapers soar above old town squares and yet the contrast between modern and medieval Frankfurt blends seamlessly. Home to one of the world’s largest stock exchanges as well as the gleaming headquarters of the European Central Bank, the German city has become known for its modern skyline and financial vigor. Yet at its heart, Frankfurt is an unexpectedly traditional and charming city, with quaint medieval buildings huddled in village-like neighborhoods with hearty regional food, beautiful parks and cosy taverns and outdoor cafes. Charming pockets of medieval old town remain in the Altstadt district and around Romerberg Square where locals come to drink.

The city also has a notable dining scene ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to hearty pub grub at the lively Sachsenhausen district where diners can enjoy generous helpings of boiled meats, apple wine and German beer. Travellers can’t miss out on traditional “Frankfurter” sausages - as the Germans call them – thin sausages made from pork traditionally served with bread, yellow mustard, horseradish and potato salad. For the kids, Frankfurt Zoo is open every day of the year. The popular tourist attraction is a veritable green oasis in the middle of the city. It’s home to more than 4500 animals and is well known for its big cats exhibit. For the best view in the city, the centrally located and architecturally award-winning Main Tower allows punters to travel up to 200 meters into the clouds to the observation deck where they are rewarded with a spectacular view of the city. Other wandering spots include Frankfurt’s city hall and Bethmannpark park.

Fly into Frankfurt in June or July for the warmest, driest weather and bright sunny days that stretch on for 16 hours or so in mid summer. There's a plethora of outdoor events to get involved in too, from al fresco pub sessions in the beer gardens to beach bars on the River Main. December is another popular time to visit as the city hosts one of Germany’s largest Christmas markets.

Avoid the crowds

To beat the crowds (and the peak prices of mid summer), fly to Frankfurt between April and June or September and October. Rainfall is low during these months, the weather is nice and mild and the city's gardens are blooming. When you're not out exploring the city, get involved in the Ratsweg Fairground folk festival and the Frankfurter Sausage Festival.
