Where the mountains meet the sea

Nestled where Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor meets Vrmac, one of the country’s many mountains, the municipality of Tivat is steeped in history, having belonged to the Romans, the Serbs and the Republic of Venice. Tivat holidays can take in much more than the small central town, which has recently doubled in size thanks to the luxury Porto Montenegro development.

It’s a great shopping destination, where seemingly every high-end store you can think of has an outlet, next to glossy restaurants and glamorous nightclubs. Along the shore, the epic, dark mountains are reflected in the bright, clear bay, which can be explored via affordable day-hire speedboats.

Holidays to Tivat also include the majestic old Venetian town of Perast and its many palazzos, while Unesco World Heritage Site Kotor is nearby. Here, through the narrow tangled streets of the old town,1,350 steps take you up the colossal ramparts, which kept the city safe from Ottoman invasion and now provide a glorious view over the harbour. Other excursions take you to the verdant Solila Nature Reserve and the Lustica Peninsula, where beach bars thrive and small fishing villages provide stone jetties which are popular with visitors and locals who leap into the glorious water below.

    Although Tivat was part of the Venetian Empire, it’s now more authentic to pick local seafood and grilled meats – veal is a favourite – over pasta or pizza dishes.
    Don’t let the huge pine trees fool you – it can get pleasantly hot here over the summer months, with temperatures rising to highs of 31°C.
    The best time to visit Tivat is probably during summer when temperatures can reach average highs of 28℃. However, rainfall is not uncommon at this time, so remember to pack your waterproofs. The spring and autumn months are also a good time if you want to avoid the summer crowds. Temperatures during spring are often warm and can reach highs of 23℃ while, in early autumn, you can still expect to see temperatures reach highs of 26℃.
    Tivat has plenty of good beaches, which is one of the many reasons tourists flock to the coastal town. Kalardovo beach is popular with both locals and visitors, while Plavi Horizonti Plaza is a sandy beach known for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The peninsula of Lustica also has some charming beaches ideal for an enjoyable afternoon. Though, if you really want somewhere you can get away from it all, the deserted Sveti Marko Island is a quiet spot only reachable by boat.
    You can definitely live like royalty at Porto Montenegro, but alcohol, car hire and hotel accommodation is remarkably affordable outside of the main luxury spots.
    Tivat is best known for its rich history and its beautiful bay that attracts tourists from all over Europe. The region was originally part of Albania Veneta before becoming a town at the end of the 19th century. Tivat is also known for being the home of Porto Montenegro, a former naval base that is today a luxurious marina. Here, you’ll find several high-end boutiques and trendy restaurants, as well as some million-pound yachts moored up during the summer months.
    Tivat, as well as its neighbouring towns, have a great mix of nightlife options. Porto Montenegro, an upmarket marina, has several luxurious restaurants and wine bars. If you prefer something a little more traditional, Tivat’s downtown is the place you should go for welcoming taverns. If you're happy to travel further afield for an evening’s entertainment, the town of Budva is very popular due to its beachside bars and clubs. A 90-minute drive away, Montenegro’s capital of Podgorica has lively bars and clubs catering to a variety of crowds.
    With plenty of child-friendly beaches and attractions, as well as welcoming resorts, Tivat makes a great holiday option for families. Kids will love going out on the regular boat tours that take in the Bay of Kotor. There are also plenty of attractions, including the Sailboat Jadran, Maritime Heritage Museum and Big City Park, that are worth exploring. Perfect for a day out, Tivat is also home to family-friendly sandy beaches with shallow waters ideal for snorkelling.
    As Tivat is a small town, hiring a car often isn’t necessary. Most attractions can easily be reached on foot. However, if you plan on exploring the neighbouring towns, as well as the capital of Podgorica, hiring a car is best. It's also important to be aware that there is no bus service running from Tivat Airport, so a hire car or taxi is often the only option. If you plan on hiring a car during your stay, there are several agencies in Tivat and at the airport.
