When you’re strolling around Market Square, looking around at the old buildings, you wouldn’t think that there was a whole other world beneath your feet. But there is, and it’s one of Kraków’s most popular attractions. The underground network of tunnels was discovered during excavations, and now, this once-hidden medieval history is brought to life using modern technology. 

The ultimate Polish comfort food, perfect for tucking into after a long day sightseeing. Pierogi are spongy, juicy boiled dumplings that can be filled with all sorts of things. Cheese and potato is a local favourite, along with wild mushroom and sauerkraut, but you can find all sorts, including sweet pierogi stuffed with blueberries.

Made with honey instead of the usual golden syrup or molasses, Poland’s take on gingerbread has a soft sweetness and warming kick. Piernik is usually served at Christmas, but there’s no law stopping you sinking your teeth into this sweet and spicy treat any time of year. Back in ancient times, it was often served as a snack alongside vodka.

This 16th-century Renaissance building in Market Square was once a major hub of international trade. Today, it’s one of the best places in the entire country to pick up local souvenirs and trinkets. Expect a busy bazaar-like experience, with an avenue of stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery and local amber to stuffed toys and fridge magnets. 

Not sure what to bring home as a memory of your Polish travels? How about something featuring the legendary Wawel dragon? Said to have lived at the foot of Wawel Hill in Kraków, the mythical dragon terrorised the city before being outsmarted by a savvy cobbler. 

Running north from Market Square, Florianska Street is Kraków’s hottest shopping destination. Despite a few modern retailers moving in, there’s still a lot of old-town charm here, with traditional Polish confectioners and historic arcades.
