It’s not always easy to find ‘the real Cyprus’, but that’s exactly what you’ll get in Pissouri. Pissouri holidays – much like Pissouri life in general – largely centre around the peaceful village, which has a clutch of cafés and shops, and several pretty churches. Much eating, drinking and merriment can be found in Pissouri’s beating heart – the village square. The atmosphere is unhurried and there aren’t crowds of people, and that’s what makes it magical.

There’s also an amphitheatre nearby that’s used for theatre shows and concerts if you want a cultural fix. Thanks to its easygoing vibe, Pissouri is a great place to take children. Restaurants are family-friendly and Pissouri Beach has a Blue Flag and ample facilities.
Pissouri enjoys a typically warm Mediterranean climate, with highs of more than 30°C in the summer months and an average of about 14°C through January and February.
Pissouri is one of the quieter corners of Cyprus so it’s good to visit at any time. In the summer, the local villagers put on some shows for tourists in the evenings. The amphitheatre that opened in 2000 is used for plays and concerts. Populated almost entirely by farmers, this place is dictated by the rhythms of agricultural life. Come here to find local wines, squares dotted with cafes and eight hiking trails reaching into the hills and down to the sea. The nearby cliffs are a fossil hunter’s dream.
Pissouri’s restaurants offer many authentic Cypriot classics, including ‘meze’ (a selection of small dishes), stuffed aubergine, ‘souvlaki’ (meat skewers), moussaka and lots of fresh seafood dishes.
Separated from the village by a few miles of vineyards and agricultural land, the beach at Pissouri is quiet and relaxed. It’s lined with a few local tavernas for traditional Cypriot dishes. While you’ll have facilities – loungers and sunshades can be hired – it’s never crowded. The beach itself is a blend of pebbles and soft sand, has Blue Flag status commending its cleanliness, and is in a striking setting surrounded by white cliffs. Popular with families, there’s also excellent disabled access with ramps and pathways leading onto the beach.
Pissouri is between Paphos and Limassol, making it a perfect base for people who want to explore Cyprus from a quiet retreat. It’s close to the southwest coastline, buried in the hills and vineyards. Known for making wine and halloumi cheese, you’ll find many Cypriot traditions are kept alive in this charming little village.
If you are looking for the stuff of legend, Aphrodite’s rock – where she emerged from the sea – is just a few minutes from Pissouri. But if you want to visit some of Cyprus’s famous archaeological sites, you’re less than half an hour from the finest. The UNESCO World Heritage Site the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos is well within reach for a day trip, as is the dramatic amphitheatre at Kourion.
Although there are miles of hiking and biking trails leading directly from Pissouri, it’s a good idea to hire a car. While retaining its small village charm, Pissouri has developed all the facilities and amenities tourists will require. But it’s not on the coast and the beach is a few miles away, and everything on offer in Paphos and Limassol is only 30 minutes by car. You could even head into the Troodos mountains and the highest of all, Mount Olympus, is only an hour north.
Take the coast road and you’ll be in Paphos in just half an hour. With only 20 miles between them, it means Pissouri is ideally placed for a holiday in traditional Cyprus without missing out on the malls and amenities of Paphos.
