Relax in a pretty harbour town

Ever fancied staying in a peaceful port town on the Med? Latchi shows it’s exactly as dreamy as you would imagine. Set on Cyprus’s northwestern coast, life in Latchi revolves around its small harbour, where super-yachts bob gently next to tiny fishing boats, and locals and tourists kick back in waterside cafés. This all makes Latchi holidays blissfully easy-going and great for anyone who wants a laid-back break. But that’s not to say there isn’t plenty to keep you occupied.

Latchi Beach offers water sports and boat trips, and there are numerous tours and excursions available, plus the immense Akamas Peninsula National Park on your doorstep. There are also numerous tavernas dotted around, plus a decent selection of bars – some with live traditional music to up the pace. But things never get too lively in Latchi and, as you watch the world go by with your harbourside view, you’ll agree that’s precisely what makes holidays to Latchi so charming.

Your Latchi questions, answered

With its mix of sand and pebbles, Latchi Beach is one of the less-crowded beaches in the area. It’s great for swimming and has sunloungers, cafés and dramatic mountain views.
Children will love many of the main activities available in Latchi, including the beach, boat trips and 4x4 tours. There’s also a playground in nearby Polis.
If you like hikes or off-road cycle routes the winter temperatures are ideal in Latchi. Most tourists come in the height of summer and it can feel crowded in August. From May to June and September to October, the beaches are quieter and the sea warm enough for you to swim. Bars and cafes open all year – and they say Latchi has some of the best fish restaurants on the island – but they close earlier and have a more relaxed atmosphere than the busy summer months.
If you want to drive through Akamas Peninsula National Park yourself, you’ll need to hire a 4x4. There are also several quad-bike rental agencies in town if you just want to explore locally.
Latchi is nestled in the far northwest corner of Cyprus, a large bay that is now protected by a breakwater. It feels as though you’re retreating into a distant past when you come here, though it’s less than an hour from the airport in Paphos and just under two hours from the largest airport at Limassol. An accessible retreat, you should go if you're a hiker, biker or just trying to get away from the crowds.
The Akamas Peninsula is one of the most unspoilt corners of Cyprus, folding together valleys, gorges and wide sandy beaches. This is where you can visit the Blue Lagoon on a glass-bottomed boat, cycle along tracks in the mountains, or head to Aphrodite’s Bath. Here, the Greek Goddess of love is said to have met Adonis in an enchanting grotto nestled in the shade of a fig tree. The area around Latchi is packed with charming villages, dramatic viewpoints and traditional fishing ports.
After the sun? You may head here between June and October. However, for a budget break, you'll want to look at December to March. This is the quiet season in Cyprus when many of the larger hotels offer significant discounts without reducing the quality of their service. Although the locals won’t swim in the sea in the winter – it’s often below 20°C – it’s certainly an option if you're a determined visitor.
In addition to Aphrodite’s Baths, the ancient ruins in Paphos are less than an hour by car. The UNESCO World Heritage Tombs of the Kings are one of the most important archaeological sites on Cyprus, and the Paphos mosaics offer a glimpse into Roman lives two thousand years ago. You can even drive to the Kourion Roman amphitheatre in Episkopi in an hour and a quarter. The imposing arena with vaulted corridors overlooks the sea and is dramatic even without players on the stage.
Paphos and its airport, shopping malls and bustling harbour are less than an hour by car from Latchi. It makes for a wonderful day trip, whether you want to dip into the more touristy side of the island or some of its most historic sites. A coastal boardwalk stretches for over seven kilometres from Paphos and passes many of these ruins and sites.
