There are plenty of beaches stretching around Hersonissos, ranging from spots with a party atmosphere nearer the town to quieter beaches, tucked away further along the coast.
The summer is the most popular time for holidays in Hersonissos and a lot's going on during the season. Panagia Festiva in August is a fine chance to experience traditional Cretan music and dance, while the Star Beach water park has foam parties and festivals. September is an excellent time to visit as you can enjoy cheaper rates and the yearly International Folk Festival. April and May are also generally inexpensive months, and the weather starts warming up around this time so you get plenty of sunshine.
For a change of pace, visit nearby Koutouloufari, a small, peaceful village nestled among olive groves. Or take a brisk walk along Aposelemi Gorge, with its gentle hiking trail.
The beaches closest to Hersonissos have soft sands and clear blue seas, but the main beach is quite narrow in places. You have to arrive early to stake out your spot. There are bars and restaurants on the main beach, so it has a lively atmosphere. There are quieter, more spacious beaches just a short drive away if you’re looking for somewhere to sunbathe and read a book. The sea around the north of Crete can be quite choppy, so if you’re planning to take a dip, make sure you stick to areas marked as safe.
Hersonissos has a lively nightlife with something to suit all tastes. You can listen to Cretan music in a cosy taverna, hit the beachfront for a night in the bars, or enjoy the local foam parties held in the summer. If you want all-night parties and nightclubs, Hersonissos is only 10-15 minutes away from Stalida and Malia, which are famous as major party towns, especially during the summer season.
Hersonissos is a lively town in the north of Crete that always has plenty going on. The town sits on a long stretch of coastline with a harbour where you can often book day trips out to sea. Hersonissos holidays are a good choice for couples who want a romantic break with a livelier edge and lots to do. You can spend days on the beach, enjoying watersports, or take a day trip to Heraklion or any of the nearby villages. You might even want to rent a car to explore off the beaten track. At night, there are romantic restaurants along the beach where you can enjoy the sunset, or you can find a cosy taverna for dinner.
