Head south from Porto Cristo and you’ll find yourself in the sleepy surroundings of Cala Mandia – a petite resort that’s all about the beach. And it’s easy to see why. A deep crescent of white, powdery-soft sand coupled with turquoise Mediterranean waters make for the perfect holiday combo.

Venture beyond the beach, though, and you’ll find there’s plenty ‘round these parts to keep you busy. Head to nearby Porto Cristo and you can spend your days exploring underground caves, rambling through characterful streets, and eating fresh seafood courtesy of the fishing boats that are a mainstay in the harbour. Head inland to the city of Manacor, meanwhile, and you can expect local buzzy markets, charming little churches, and plenty of history.

Is it good for family holidays?

Holidays here are on the more subdued side, but it’s still a good shout for a family getaway. The beach is kid-friendly, with a lifeguard on duty during the summer months, and Porto Cristo is an easy drive or bus ride away, if you fancy a day trip or excursion.

How far is it from Porto Cristo?

It’s less than half an hour on the bus, or about a 15-minute drive.

Should I rent a car?

Totally up to you. If you love exploring the countryside and taking day trips here, there, and everywhere, then it’ll definitely come in handy to have your own set of wheels. If you’re just planning on heading to nearby towns like Porto Cristo and Manacor, there are regular buses. And of course, holing up in the hotel with a good book and a cocktail is always an option, too.

Are there water sports at the beach?

This stretch of coastline is popular for snorkelling and boat trips, while for the likes of kayaking and canoeing, Porto Cristo has a smattering of water sports centres.

Soak up the sun
This place was tailor-made for sun worshipping. Scope out your spot on the beach and let the sunshine do the rest. Spring for a lounger and parasol, or snag a patch of pristine sand – the choice is yours.
Explore the caves
Nearby Porto Cristo is home to the famous Dragon Caves, which are home to an impressive underground lake. Expect turquoise waters, ragged rock formations, and a mystical vibe.
Via Verde
Head to Manacor and you’ll find the only greenway in the Balearic Islands. Popular with hikers and cyclists, the 29km stretch of decommissioned trainline winds its way through the scenic countryside.
