Agia Varvara Holidays

A CHARMING NOOK OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Nestled 41 kilometres east of Heraklion, between the popular, lively towns of Malia and Sissi, lies the stunning and much quieter Agia Varvara. Named after the nearby church dedicated to Santa Barbara, this picturesque haven features a serene bay, flanked by a contemporary four-star hotel, the Grecotel Meli Palace.

Across the bay lies the islet of Agia Varvara, accessible by a refreshing swim or if you’ve got the balance for it, a stand-up paddleboard. Back on the island, take a stroll through the tiny village’s narrow streets, scattered with whitewashed houses and apartments.

The scenic landscape surrounding Agia Varvara provides opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring the countryside, which is full of olive groves, cacti, and fragrant pines. If you’re renting a car, drive the scenic routes to beaches such as Almyrida and Kalyves, for pristine sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. And, if you’re after a party, Malia is just an eight-minute drive from the sleepy shores of Agia Varvara.
