Sofia flights land you in what was once the Balkan peninsula's hot spring capital, one of the reasons it has played such an important role in European history. Today, a number of springs are still accessible. The most well-known is located right in the heart of Sofia, near the Tsum shopping centre. You'll see locals arriving with their reusable containers to bottle up mineral water straight from the source. While the city centre's mineral baths are now closed, the building has been transformed into a museum where you can learn more about the history of the local springs.

For a different side of Bulgaria's history, head to the St. Aleksander Nevski Cathedral, one of the biggest orthodox churches in the world. Its Neo-Byzantine architecture and light-reflecting gold domes are ultra-impressive. In the winter, it transforms into one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts.

For a relaxing day out, take a one-hour drive south, where public baths can still be found in the town of Kostenets. This is a great way to soak up some Bulgarian culture outside of the peak tourist areas.

Throughout Sofia's city centre, you'll find plenty of chic cafes with al-fresco seating, so you can just sit back and watch the world go by as you dine on delicious food. As a capital city, it's easy to find all sorts of international cuisines here. But why not try something local? Bulgarian food shares a lot of its flavours with neighbouring countries. Sirene, a feta-like cheese, is one of the most popular foods, and definitely worth a try. It's the main ingredient in a dish called mish-mash; an omelette made with tomatoes, pepper and onions.

Looking for some good nightlife? Try the Studentiski grad neighbourhood where most of the university accommodation is, for Rakia is the drink to try in the local bars, a strong fruit brandy usually made from plum or grape.
